The first operas were composed in the late 16th and early 17th centuries in Italy. Some of the earliest composers of opera include Jacopo Peri, Claudio Monteverdi, and Giulio Caccini. The most popular theme for operas during this time was mythology and ancient history, with many operas based on Greek and Roman myths and legends. These early operas were often performed in the courts of Italian nobility and were a blend of music, drama, and spectacle. **
